Does "id" matter in JSON RPC for Ethereum?

Does "id" matter in JSON RPC for Ethereum?

At https://github.com/ethereum/wiki/wiki/JSON-RPC "id" is always different for each RPC call and it's a digit. Is this made of purpose, is each have a percise id assigned to it? Or can it be random, as per RPC specification?

Initially there was only a modified firmware released by user efudd on Bitcointalk that was sold to interested people, but now there is also a free version of a modified firmware available with unlocked frequencies by smartass111.
